OpenAir St.Gallen 2027: Music and Community in the Sittertobel

OpenAir St.Gallen 2027 returns to the magnificent Sittertobel valley for its 49th edition, bringing four days of live music, camping and shared summer adventure to one of Switzerland’s most distinctive festival settings. Surrounded by woodland, rolling meadows and the River Sitter, the site creates a natural amphitheatre where major performances and intimate discoveries unfold beneath the open sky.

Founded in 1977 by Freddy “Gagi” Geiger and a small team of music enthusiasts, OpenAir St.Gallen began as a platform for regional and Swiss bands. The first gathering welcomed just over 2,000 visitors to Ätschberg in Abtwil. After moving to the Sittertobel in 1981, it developed into one of Switzerland’s oldest and most respected open-air festivals, attracting a loyal international audience while retaining its strong local identity.

The official 2027 line-up has yet to be revealed, but visitors can expect an eclectic programme spanning rock, pop, indie, hip-hop and electronic music. Previous editions have welcomed artists including Twenty One Pilots, Nina Chuba, Paul Kalkbrenner, Zara Larsson, Queens of the Stone Age, The Chainsmokers, Placebo, Muse, Florence + The Machine and The Killers. Alongside major international names, OpenAir St.Gallen continues to showcase Swiss performers and emerging artists across its principal stages and smaller discovery spaces.

Camping is central to the experience. Unlike many large festivals, the campsites are integrated into the event grounds, creating a temporary village where music, conversation and community continue between performances. Visitors who prefer additional comfort can choose from hotels, guesthouses and other accommodation in St.Gallen and the surrounding region.

Food stalls and bars serve a varied selection of international dishes, vegetarian and vegan choices, regional specialities and festival favourites. Sustainability also plays an important role, with measures focused on responsible waste management, ecological protection, transparent organisation and preserving the sensitive Sittertobel landscape.

The festival site sits close to the city of St.Gallen and can be reached using local public transport and dedicated event connections. Travellers arriving by rail can route through St.Gallen’s main station before continuing towards the festival grounds. Waterproof clothing, reliable footwear and layers for changing temperatures are recommended, as conditions in the valley can shift quickly.
